Congratulations to Joanna Moneta!![]() On March 23, 2023, mgr inż. Joanna Moneta defended her doctoral dissertation entitled "Mechanisms of strain relaxation in InGaN films grown on (0001) oriented GaN substrates" supervised by prof. dr inż. Julita Smalc-Koziorowska. Congratulations for the high quality scientific work and excellent presentation of the PhD thesis! Good luck in the further scientific career path! VIIth Winter Workshop Kalatówki 2023![]() VIIth Winter Workshop Kalatówki 2023 on Physics and Applications of Nitride Semiconductors will be organized on March 26-31, 2023 in Zakopane (Poland). The workshop will gather the researchers from the Institute of High Pressure Physics Polish Academy of Sciences and from the collaborating scientific institutes. The Winter Workshop Kalatówki has been serving as a platform for exchanging information and ideas between the laboratories of the Institute of High Pressure Physics for years. Scientific subjects covered include physics and technology of quantum structures of AlInGaN semiconductors, mainly in the context of light emitters. Nitride-based electronics and crystal growth physics is also in focus. This year, the invited guests of the VIIth Winter Workshop Kalatówki 2023 will be Prof. Enrique Calleja (University of Madrid) and Prof. Tomasz Czyszanowski (Lodz University of Technology). Publication in Progress in Material Science by authors from our Institute, X-PressMatter Laboratory![]() Explaining and describing previtreous dynamics is one of the challenges of the 21st century. So far, the proposed theories and relationships that scale viscosity or relaxation time on cooling have not been widely accepted for experimental verification. A broader and more comprahensive approach to these problems is presented by a team of researchers from our Institute, the X-PressMatter Laboratory: Aleksandra Drozd-Rzoska, Sylwester J. Rzoska and Szymon Starzonek. Their work "New scaling paradigm for dynamics in glass-forming systems", will soon be published in the prestigious journal Progress in Materials Science (IF=48.165) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pmatsci.2023.101074

Institute Seminar![]() Can the latest achievements of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) pave a fundamentally new way of doing science? How to teach the algorithm a proper analysis of the huge amounts of data, highlighting anomalies and detecting patterns that humans could never have spotted? Dr Kazimierz Skrobas from our Institute, the Laboratory of Nanomaterials, will introduce the data processing technique called Machine Learning (ML) and show his material science research examples that employ AI. He will present an application of two simple ML algorithms called Decision Tree and Random Forest to X-ray diffraction data processing will be shown. X-ray diffraction is a basic tool for crystal structure characterization but in many cases analysis is not trivial and extraction of full information is cumbersome. This is true especially for nanostructures where crystal size, crystal shape, and deviation of the atomic structure from perfect periodicity are of particular interest. The Seminar “Application of Machine Learning to material science domain” will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 15:30* on Zoom platform. To get the link to join the seminar, please contact us at dyrekcja@unipress.waw.pl *note that the seminar will start at 15:30, that is 30 min later than usually. 50 years have passed! Summary of the UNIPRESS contribution to semiconductor physics![]() In 2022 the Institute of High Pressure Physics PAS (IHPP PAS), also known as UNIPRESS, celebrated its 50th anniversary. The contribution of UNIPRESS scientists to semiconductor physics and technology has been summarized by prof. Izabella Grzegory in the invited talk on „Jaszowiec 2022” conference - 50th International School & Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors. The most important subjects covered in her talk given at „Jaszowiec 2022” have been summarized in a paper published recently in Acta Physica Polonica A. Prof. Grzegory writes about the beginnings of pressure studies of narrow band-gap semiconductors, which today are extremely interesting due to their topological properties. She also discusses the fundamental aspects of gallium nitride (GaN) crystallization that is now the foundation of advanced physics and technology of optoelectronic devices currently being developed and manufactured in laboratories of the Institute.
